· 4 min readUnderstanding International Customs Clearance
Customs clearance is one of the most critical, and most challenging, parts of international logistics. Here is how it works and how to get it right.
What is international customs clearance?
Customs clearance is the process of making sure goods entering or leaving a country comply with all applicable laws, regulations and procedures. It has five main parts.
- 01Documentation review and preparationCommercial invoices, bills of lading, packing lists and certificates of origin.
- 02Tariff classification and valuationAssigning the correct Harmonized System (HS) codes and declaring accurate values.
- 03Duty and tax paymentCalculating and paying the duties and taxes that apply to your goods.
- 04Customs inspectionPhysical or documentary checks of the shipment when customs requests them.
- 05Release and deliveryOnce approved, the goods are released for onward delivery.
Why it's complex
- 01Every country has its own regulations and tariff structures.
- 02Trade policies and agreements change regularly.
- 03Documentation errors trigger delays and penalties.
- 04Non-compliance carries serious financial and reputational risk.
- 05Restricted goods, such as chemicals and medical supplies, face heavier security screening.
